15,000km's around Europe on a 70cc Vespa - who said the Italians are crazy?

06 June 21

Andrea Fucile is no crazy Italian, but a determined and calculating rider on a mission to raise money for charity.

Travelling on his mammoth journey, Andrea called into the Weather Beaters SC near Darlington and stayed overnight with Peter Green.

After a hearty Full English from Peter, the two of them set off from Stockton at 8am to head over to the west to pick up the A68 to take Andrea unto the Scottish Border and beyond to his next overnight stay in Edinburgh.

A few confirmatory from Peter said they were on course for me meeting me at Corbridge to join them on the journey unto the border. The sun was out in Corbridge and whilst waiting at the Shell garage it felt unusually like the south of Italy, where Andrea comes from! But knowing that in the borders you can get four seasons in a day, it was never taken for granted that this was likely to last.

Eventually they both arrived around 11 and Andrea was already sending a live video feed to his YouTube group. This is how he raises cash, so I quickly learnt after several stops on route that this was the norm. The A68 is notorious for both its fantastic views and riding experience north of Hadrian's Wall, but also for some lunatic drivers - so I must admit I felt quite exposed riding along at a speed no grater than 30mph to allow the little Vespa to deal with the ups and downs of the road. With a few idiots and fast moving lorries and did wonder how Andrea had got this far on his little Vespa without incident!

We called into Chesters Roman Fort - well had to show Andrea where maybe some of his ancestors once lived. Then it was on up to Rochester where we RV'd with Russel Emmerson on his T5.

The last section up to Carter Bar and the border was slow with the little Vespa struggling up the hill. But she made it and thats where we let Andra continue his journey to Edinburgh.

Distinguished gathering in Newcastle

23 May 21

Well the weather held off this year and many scooterists were out with some fantastic classic motorcycles and suitably dressed riders for a charity ride around Newcastle and North Tyneside.

An early start for most with a number of motorcycles and scooters meeting just outside Triumph, Newcastle for 9am but with no rain in sight it promised to be a grand day out.

This years event was obviously different to previous years because of the restrictions with Covid. The organisers were very concerned with the issues of social distancing and current gathering laws. So riders were encouraged to follow a set route through the town centre, Jesmond and Gosforth with different start points and with small groups travelling in different directions.

We set off from Triumph and did a couple of circuits in our finery, waving at other groups as we passed. Many had pre-booked cafe's for mid-morning stop-offs and it was a great atmosphere riding past groups sitting on the street enjoying a coffee.

Our stop-off was some distance away from the official route at the Benton Ale House, where Paul Hunter had arranged a coffee and meet-up.

Just before lunchtime we all headed on scooters and motorcycles up to the coast via Backworth and down along the seafront through Whitley Bay to Tynemouth. We stopped outside the priory for a short while then most of us headed down to the Fish Quay for some drinks and food at the Ships Cat. Mid afternoon we returned to the Benton Ale House and then home.

All back to the 80's for RED LONDON'S new promo video of 'Looking for a brighter sky'

09 May 21

So it was time to dig out the old scooter jackets and Dr Martins and head down to Roker seafront on the Lambrettas to help the band in a new promo video. A few beers and a puncture to fix and some good fun blasting up and down the seafront for the camera.

We had been invited by Simon Collings to take part in the video shoot. His son Dan plays guitar in the band and both are scooterists. Meeting up at the Roker Hotel we waited for the band to appear. They were shooting other scenes around Sunderland and whilst this happened we sat around with old friends having a good laugh. When the band arrived with the cameraman we were asked to ride up and down the seafront a few times and then follow a car with the camera in the back. All good fun and plenty jockeying about to try and get on the camera - not that we are vain in any way! The song is a catchy little number too and the end result has been edited very well indeed. Hopefully it will pay dividends for the band. A super afternoon and something a little different to the norm. Everybody involved had a super time.

Red London are a punk band that formed in Sunderland in December 1981, influenced by The Clash, Chelsea, SLF, The Angelic Upstarts, The Ruts and The Jam. The band named themselves after a Sham 69 song.

The band was formed by guitarist Kid Stoker, soon joined by brother Gaz Stoker on bass (from fellow Sunderland punk band The Rebels, other members of which went on to form Red Alert), as well as vocalist Patty Smith and drummer Raish Carter. In 1982 they signed to Razor Records, and their first release was 1983's Sten Guns in Sunderland EP, followed by the This is England LP in 1984, which received a 5/5 review in Sounds.[2]

The band began touring Europe from 1985. Having been replaced on drums for the band's debut album, Raish Carter returned on vocals replacing Patty Smith for third release, 1987 EP Pride and Passion, on French label Gougnaf Mouvement. Another French label, Negative, released second album Outlaws in 1989, by which time Marty Clark had taken over vocals. A series of releases followed in the 1990s for various labels both in the UK and abroad.

The band reunited in 2018 and played their first gig at the Museum Vaults in Sunderland.

Looking for a brighter sky is from the Coming back for you EP.

Current members of the band: Patty Smith, Gaz Stoker, John Forster, Danny Collings and Marty Jackso

Sombre start to the scooter season

09 Apr 21

11 year old Keisha Watson was laid to rest on Friday 09 April. Her parents had requested that the cortege be followed by as many scooters as possible from her home in Hartlepool to the funeral.Keisha was battling cancer from being 4 year's old. She's had been treated for years at the RVI ward 4 of the Children's Cancer ward.

She unfortunately relapsed and had to start treatment again. She had been an absolute warrior through all this. Tubes were fitted for her heart as it was drowning and her kidneys and after all the treatment she had been through she rang the bell again but unfortunately a few days later she passed away but was cancer free. The hospital are still looking into cause of death. Absolutely tragic for such a little soul.

Many scooterists turned up to fulfil her parents wishes and provided a suitable escort from her home to the crematorium.

No fooling - the NESC RRC 21 gets underway!

01 Apr 21

An amazing 135 riders have signed up and started the challenge. £1350 has been immediately donated to the Great North Air Ambulance Service in kickstarting many individual sponsorship efforts by the riders throughout the challenge up until the 31st October. This fantastic picture was taken by Nigel Sleighthorn, an entrant in the challenge and shows his scooter in front of the neolithic standing stones known as Long Meg and her sisters, near Penrith in Cumbria. One of the 450 locations that riders are discovering all across the region throughout the challenge.

Its a beautiful thing

22 Feb 21

Gary Sangster's S1 Lambretta hits the front cover of Scootering magazine with a five page feature inside! - and rightly so.

I first saw this scooter down the Quayside in Newcastle on a blustery day back in 2019. Immediately I knew that it would be destined for national recognition in some form and certainly a trophy winner at any custom show.

Well my March edition of Scootering magazine has just landed through the front door - and there she is! Resplendent on the front cover no less. With a five page feature inside, the whole of Gary's build is explained in detail and makes for a very entertaining read.

It is so nice to see a local scooterist have his creation featured in a national magazine. I dare anyone not to dislike this simplistically stylish custom scooter. The colours are superb and compliment the natural beauty of this design classic perfectly.

Gary has been on regular ride outs with the NESC and is a regular down the Quayside on a Tuesday night. Hopefully you will get a chance to see it in the flesh.

In the meantime go buy Scootering or download a copy when available at www.scootering.com

Got it all Wrapped Up!

19 Feb 21

Carole Ann Miller has been a busy bee during this cold snap and has been producing some custom seat, pad & wheel covers for Modena/Milano type of scooter

Confident of her designs and technique she has now opened up her skills for everyone who wants to spruce up their scooters in readiness (hopefully) to get out in the spring.

Carole is hoping to do other types of scooter when she is able to do the patterns for them.

Also she is keen to help support our charity - The Great North Air Ambulance Service, she has very kindly offered the proceeds of her first sale to the cause - well done Carol!

So if you fancy doing something a little different to help customise your ride, why not get in touch with Carole and send her a message about your requirements etc.

As a rough guide Carole is selling the seat cover and back rest pad for £45 including postage, which is a great price.

Contact Carole by clicking the link below.

  The NESC Rider & Club
Challenge 2021 announced

28 Jan 21

So here it is! A chance for all types of scooter, moped and motorcycle riders (yes some of us ride everything!) to enter a challenge that will get you out and about (when non-essential travel restrictions are lifted). and to raise some money for charity!

Some may remember the old Saturday morning TV show 'Why don't you' with the catch line "sitting at home watching TV, turn it off, no good for me!" in the title song. Well its a good quote for us to hopefully come the 1st April to do the same thing.

With 450 locations to visit in the North East from historic castles and stately homes, picturesque churches and villages, pubs, bridges, waterfalls, amazing sculptures and art installations as well as scenic geographical features to name but a few. Turning that TV off and going out on your beloved machine (albeit to start on your own) seems a pretty good way of clearing those lockdown blues. Leaving the house, wife/husband, kids etc. for a few hours will do wonders for the soul and also benefit our charity - the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

We have not confined ourselves to the absolute borders of the region and many locations will take you into North Yorkshire, Swaledale, Cumbria, Westmorland and the Scottish Borders. This makes it fairer for our riders and clubs that border those regions to obtain points. It also gives the opportunity to travel a little further and experience some fantastic scenery.

The object of the challenge is to visit as many locations as you can and take a photograph at each location visited as evidence of your visit. Scoring points as a rider and contributing to the score of your club if you are a member.

The challenge is open to riders of all types of classic and modern scooters as well as mopeds and motorcycles as many of us own them as well. Any amount of scooters, mopeds or motorcycles owned by you can be registered and used throughout the challenge, however there are special trophies for those who visit the most locations on the one registered scooter, moped or motorcycle.

Riders who are members of a club will have their individual points contributed to the overall club score for the Best Club trophies. Clubs must have a minimum of four riders registered for the challenge to qualify.

The challenge is designed to get you out either as an individual or as a group if you desire, but only if non-essential travel is sanctioned by the government and social distancing rules across all of our region allow for everyone to travel to all locations. Therefore the start date is provisional and it may be that this date is extended beyond the 1st April. It is also possible that the rules on travel may change throughout the challenge period and therefore a certain amount of flexibility may be required on the entrants and organisers throughout.

We hope the challenge provides you with a sense of purpose in these difficult times and gets you out of the house and into some fresh air and beautiful countryside on your beloved machines. Initially this will most likely be by yourself. But eventually it maybe we can meet and ride together in small groups and share the experience of visiting new places with friends and having a good time with it.

In addition to the challenge and running concurrently alongside we are running a Photographic Competition for a bit of extra interest and fun. You will be travelling through some spectacular countryside and there is always a lot more to see than just the locations we have in the challenge. So we are looking for photos you take on your travels and we have identified some different classes to get your artistic thoughts flowing. We will pick some winners and hopefully use some of them for next years promotions. Details are given below.

Please read all the rules and understand the process. The organisers are always available to answer any questions via the usual channels. Finally, we wish you the very best luck in taking up the challenge! Ride well, enjoy the views and locations and stay safe!A Just Giving page will also be set up very soon to enable easy donations and we will of course collect at any future meet-ups or ride outs etc.

  Our charity support announced

28 Jan 21

After numerous nominations for some fantastic charitable causes all over the North East the Great North Air Ambulance Service was by far the most nominated by our members.

With the recent announcement by the Wearside Wanderers SC that they would not be able to go-ahead with their annual fund raising rally in aid of the GNAAS. The chance for the NESC to pick up the baton was a no-brainer!

The overwhelming majority of those that passed comment on the various nominated charities for the NESC to adopt were in favour of this noteworthy charity.

Many others were looked at and explored, but this one ticks the boxes for all of us as it is a charitable emergency service that not only covers the entire region of our membership, but also provides a vital service to us as road going scooterists.

With the sad news that the WWSC annual rally was again postponed to 2022 it is hoped we can continue to fund raise for this worthy charity on behalf of all scooterists in the region.

We will be very shortly announcing the details of the NESC Rider & Club Challenge 2021 and the main thrust of this will be to raise donations for the GNAAS.

A Just Giving page will also be set up very soon to enable easy donations and we will of course collect at any future meet-ups or ride outs etc.

Lucky Audrey Henderson
bags a Vespa in prize draw

12 Jan 21

Christmas Eve is always an exciting time for young and old. But it was even more special for Audrey Henderson

Like a hundred other North East Scooterists, the chance of bagging a tasty Vespa for a £20 punt, added a sense of extra expectation to the evening as Paul 'Skim' Brown raffled his Vespa off in a live draw on Facebook.

Audrey's husband Nigel had bought tickets for the pair of them, choosing 61 & 66 - their birth years in the hope of making their Christmas even more special.

Audrey said after collecting her scooter "I am thrilled to have won the scooter. We actually missed the live draw so I watched it about 30 minutes later on Paul ‘Skim’ Brown’s Facebook page and I was shocked that 66, my number was the winner!!

As well as winning the scooter Skim asked me to nominate a charity to which he would make a donation of £250 from the ticket sale money. I thought about numerous worthy charities but decided on the Great North Air Ambulance Service. I chose this charity because I think it is an invaluable service that saves the lives of many people especially motorists whether they ride on two wheels or in four."

Now many will know Audrey, a member of the Woolybacks SC and 2+2 Scooter Crew. She comes from Bishop Auckland and is no stranger to Vespas or scootering. In 2019 she won the Vespa Club Britain Regional Riders Competition as rider with her husband Nigel taking runner up and also her club the Woolybacks attained the Best Club in the region. So she is planning a few modifications to her new Vespa ready for the spring and more miles in the saddle.

We wish Audrey many safe and happy miles on her prize, maybe she will win again in this years VCB RRC on it and well done to Paul Brown for coming up with the fun raffle for Christmas and the very kind donation of £250 to the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

Classic Scooters set for a dapper

day on Tyneside on May 23

12 Dec 20

HERE DAVID TOMPKINS OF THE NEWCASTLE SETTING SONS SC GIVES A LITTLE MORE OF AN INSIGHT TO THIS DISTINGUISHED DATE FOR YOUR DIARIES IN 2021.

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride started in the Australia in 2012 and has raised over £20 million for men’s prostate and mental health charities. It’s an annual event, and has taken place in both Darlington and Newcastle in recent years. Riders (lads and lasses) should dress up for the ride and the bikes/scooters should be either classics or unusual bikes (the organisers don’t encourage modern autos, for example).

Past years on Tyneside have brought up some stunning bikes including a brand new Brough Superior. Up until now, rides were held in late September. But the 2019 ride was a bit of a disaster with several weather delays and finally a route change. So 2021’s ride will be on May 23rd.

On Tyneside it’s organised by Triumph Newcastle.

The whole point of the day is to dress up and raise money, but to have a good day out. To take part, you must register with DGR.

David is happy to try and answer any queries posted in the comments.

Check out the short video at...

The DGR turns 10 next year and is back in May. So brush off the moths and sign up for a distinguished day!

04 Dec 20

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride unites classic and vintage style motorcycle and scooter riders all over the world to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health.

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was founded in Sydney, Australia, by Mark Hawwa. It was inspired by a photo of TV Show Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic bike and wearing his finest suit. Mark decided a themed ride would be a great way of connecting niche motorcycle enthusiasts and communities while raising funds to support the men in our lives.

Since the inaugural year in 2012, The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride has run on the last Sunday of September. For 9 long years, many  have steadfastly ridden in rain and wind; dedicated to raising funds and awareness of prostate cancer and men’s mental health.

Then 2020 came, and the entire fabric of DGR changed for a moment. Riding solo, they raised an incredible amount for Movember, and came closer together as a community, sharing stories and connections to the cause. Looking ahead to 2021, they are eager to get back on the road to ride and celebrate 10 years of DGR.

The group events of DGR are integral in celebrating together, so they are taking a turn in 2021 and shaking things up to bring us together, sooner.

The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride from 2021 will permanently move to May, with the next ride being held on Sunday, May 23, 2021.

The new May date will open up the riding season for many dapper folks in the Northern Hemisphere, and those in the Southern Hemisphere will still be able to keep relatively dry and enjoy the day. This is a significant change that has been decided on due to overwhelming feedback from riders and volunteer hosts from around the world, based on the impact that the weather has had on the safety of our events in recent years.

Your volunteer hosts and their teams are working hard to make their rides happen in May, and registrations for DGR 2021 are open from late-March. So, don’t put your tweed away just yet, you’ll need it again to ride dapper for men’s health on May 23rd, 2021!

Put that date in your calendars, and prepare to celebrate 10 years of DGR. They are  working on making it the biggest year yet, and are determined to be able to celebrate this occasion in true dapper style!

Pre-register now at www.gentlemansride.com and prepare yourself to ride dapper on May 23rd, 2021!

Pinch, Punch, first day of the month and our website has gone live!

01 Dec 20

ONE THING IN LIFE I HAVE LEARNT - IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DOING - DO IT YOURSELF!

So my vision of having this website for our collective has finally materialised and not after many ups and downs.

After a couple of designers pulled out of the project for various reasons, I explored the options for others to help me. Websites I have found are expensive things to create if you want someone else to do it.

So it was back to school for me as my only option. I have spent hours teaching myself how to create a website. My eyes are falling out and my Daughters patience is fast running out with me when I'm hogging the computer and neglecting her attentions.

Well I hope I have got here to your satisfactions. I hope it is a start and that you can all suggest improvements or new sections. The elements of FaceBook have been retained but in a new way for our group that will hopefully make life easier for all in finding the information you need.

To be honest I sometimes feel like a 'one man band' but I know once you have all had a chance to use this site, you can then actively contribute to it in many ways as it is your site, our collective.

This year has been a testing time for us all, but I hope that with the establishment of the NESC and your support to it, next year will see us go from strength to strength and we will all have an enjoyable scootering 2021. Thank you all for supporting the collective.

Thanks Esme - Love Dad xxx

We will organise a NESC Meet-Up and Ride to the event on the Friday - more details to follow in events.

At time of writing chalets and caravans on the site had sold out. However

POSTPONED UNTIL NEXT YEAR

Paul Conroy the architect of the Tyneside Soul Weekenders announced his disappointment of having to cancel this event scheduled for 5-7 March 2021.

The weekend ran in 2020 just before the pandemic and the lockdown measures got into full swing. It was a huge success and tickets for 2021 went on sale shortly afterwards and were a sell out.

Paul said 'I have been clinging onto the slightest glimmer of hope that March 2021 would go ahead, but circumstances have taken over.'

For those who have purchased tickets, they will be transferred to the new dates of 4-6 March 2022. Bookings/de[posits made for the Park Hotel can be transferred through Paul. If you wish to get a ticket refund, again contact Paul directly.

Lets hope that other events that fall within the new months of 2021 don't follow suit. We wish Paul well and look forward to 2022 for another outstanding weekender.

Prospects for 2021

18 Nov 20

Covid-19 Lockdown

Since the beginning of March we have been bombarded with many different rules and do's & don'ts that have left many bewildered as to actually what they can and can't do.

As far as riding your scooter the law is clear - riding a scooter for social pleasure is allowed. You may ride with one other rider but when stopping or together off the scooters you must maintain the current social distancing rules. You can not ride in pairs and then meet-up with other multiple pairs on route or at a destination. That can be construed as a 'gathering' and therefore you could face prosecution.

You must also bear in mind that other areas of the country have different rules and the devolved governments of Wales, NI & Scotland have restrictions in place for people travelling to their countries without reasonable cause. Always check these rules before travelling.

At present the NESC are not planning any meet-ups or ride outs. The winter months see many confining their pride and joys to the garage/workshop for stripping, overhaul and maintenance. A period of hibernation for many, but some still use their scooters for commuting and indeed with milder temperatures many still prefer to ride on a regular basis over this period. If you do continue to ride then please be careful and always follow current government advice on staying safe during the pandemic.

That leaves the prospects for 2021 and a full calendar of scootering events? Well maybe not - certainly the first quarter of the new year may well see us still living under restrictions. Without the implementation of an effective vaccine it is a safe bet that we will see cancellations by event organisers, certainly up to April/May if not beyond.

The NESC will not plan anything until there is a realistic prospect of a return to relaxation of restrictions which would allow for us to meet-up.

North Tyneside Remembrance Ride

North East Scooterists honour the regions war dead

The North Tyneside Ride of Remembrance is an annual event organised by Paul hunter of the Newcastle Setting Sons SC. The event usually supports the North Tyneside Council - Royal British Legion run parade at Hawkseys Lane War Memorial but this year it was cancelled due to social distancing concerns.

Determined to raise funds for the RBL Poppy Appeal, Paul organised an alternative event at the Whitley Bay Seafront War Memorial. Many scooterists and clubs also were determined to support the annual Remembrance. The NESC also actively supported this event and encouraged members to attend and donate to the charity.

The widespread fog early on Sunday morning did not deter riders travelling from as far south as Middlesborough, Stockton and Durham to St Mary's Lighthouse for 10.00am. Nearly a hundred scooters and some motorbikes congregated in a socially distanced manner at the car park before leaving for the short ride down the seafront to the War Memorial for 11.00am and the Act of Remembrance. All the scooters parked up in front of the newly renovated Spanish City building and made their way to the memorial. Here Darren Jones read a short dedication and the Last post was sounded by Ben Laws with a two-minute silence being observed. Many of the general public also observed the ceremony and wreaths were laid by scooter clubs and representatives from the Armed Forces.

£500 was raised for the RBL by those who attended and some even donated when they could not attend. A superb effort by all and a proud contribution from North East scooterists to a worthy cause.
