Mauro Francesco

THE ITALIAN JOB THAT LIGHTS THE WAY

For those that ride Vespa's of the P Range and beyond during the night, the annoying issue of light from the headlamp in your face - as opposed to it being on the road in front of you, has always been an issue.

Well here we have found a Vespa enthusiast from Italy who has come up with a stylish solution that not only eliminates the annoying glare, but does so in a very stylish way that compliments the headset design of the P Range Vespa's.

Francesco Mauro was travelling home one evening in the Campania region of southern Italy and noticed the annoying glare coming from the headset and became aware of the way it was limiting his riding and safe handling of the scooter.

Getting home he was determined to solve the issue. After several experiments to limit the glare he came up with the idea of extending the plastic on the headset top to form am 'eyelid' that eliminated the glare and directed more light to the road and not his face!

SEAMLESS FUSION OF MATERIALS

Francesco went to work on his idea and started with the old-fashioned plastic headset from the early P Range, which he found could be specially designed to be coupled with fiberglass. Making the moulds and perfecting the technique of fusing the two materials together paid dividends in shape and style. The sanding process blends the two together seamlessly to form a stylish extended 'eyelid' to the existing headset.

When the headset is repainted as on the right, the finished product looks it was an original Piaggio design intention.

Now I know you can go and buy chrome 'peak - eyelids' that fit under the headset top and provide some reflection of the glare, but I think those look best on a true vintage Vespa in the 6T's style. Francesco's adaptation enhances the P Range headsets in a more simplistic and stylish manner.

NEW DESIGN CONCEPTS

Not content with just the 'Eyelid' design extension to the headset, Francesco has also come up with some other additional designs.

The 'Racing Front Mudguard' on the left again provides a seamless fusion of fibreglass onto the metal of the mudguard. When combined with this cutdown example of the mudguard it gives a truly unique sporty appearance to the scooter.

Another complimentary addition is the 'Racing Front Air Scoop' style fender seen below.

To the right is a 'Classic Visor' solid screen addition to the headset that gives the Vespa a 'cafe racer' style addition. It also interestingly removes the glare from the headlight as with the 'eyelid' extension.

Francesco works from his garage and this work is his hobby, but clearly he has an eye for design and as well as solving problems. Who knows what he will come up with next, but if these four options aren't testament enough to his skill. I'm sure there will be more offerings in the future.
