Introduction

The NESC Rider & Club Challenge 2023 runs from 01 May 2023 until 31 October 2023.

In 2021 we had 138 riders register for the challenge and through the efforts of individuals and clubs we were able to donate £9221.50 in total to the Great North Air Ambulance Service! In 2022 we had 44 riders register for the challenge and through the efforts of individuals and clubs we were able to donate £8,000 in total to the Blood Cancer Charity - Bright Red!

The main aim of the challenge is to raise money for local charities that serve the North East region.

Fundraising

We are changing the nature of our fundraising this year to allow individual riders and clubs to choose their own charity to support and gain sponsorship from friends and family in doing our challenge. However we will still have a 'main effort' charity that will benefit from the initial registration fee and other fund-raising events we hold throughout the year. Riders and clubs will be free to either support their own or our chosen charity.

This year we have chosen to support Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice in Middlesborough. Zoë’s Place provides a short break service, palliative and end-of-life care to babies and infants aged from birth to 5 years, living with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions.

Riders and clubs will be encouraged to formulate their own challenge out of ours that will enable them to visit some very interesting locations around our region that is within everyone's capabilities. This could simply be to visit a selction of chosen locations and receive sponsorship for doing so. Riders and clubs can generate their own Just Giving page for their chosen charity or join ours through which to channel donations etc.

Alongside our challenge riders and clubs could hold their own fundraising event - for example travelling to a set number of locations in fancy dress on a certain day or holding a club ride out to a series of remote locations over a weekend with camping could be great fun and give ideas for further fundraising.

Changes from last year

The Registration Fee has been reduced from £20 to £10 to reflect the economic circumstances we are in.

The £10 will all be donated to our chosen charity for the year.

Awards this year are being reduced in number and the cost of these will be met by other NESC fundraising throughout the year. Everyone will receive a Certificate of Achievement and we are looking at getting special stickers done for visiting 50, 100 & 200 Locations (Bronze, Silver, Gold).

We have also reduced the number of locations by over half from the the previous two years to 200 locations to visit. Some riders, clubs were put off by the volume of locations offered - although visiting all of them was never the challenge - raising funds was the main effort - and last year this was proven by the smaller contingent of riders actively gaining sponsorship for their efforts throughout the year, came very close to matching what we had raised in the first year of the challenge,

Also we have deliberatley confined ourselves to the absolute borders of the North East region to make the challenge more accessible to riders on lesser CC'd machines and for riders who like shorter ride outs.

We will this year not accept any location visits during the hours of darkness in the interests of preventing accidents through fatigue etc. There are plenty of light evenings coming up and there are issues at some locations with riders turning up in the middle of the night or early hours, which can arouse concern and suspicion from local residents.

General Summary

The challenge is open to riders of all types of classic and modern scooters as well as mopeds and motorcycles.

Detailed rules, conditions and instructions are sent upon completion of registration.

The amount of vehicles you can register is two, but you can still register further bikes if you sell or are unfortunate enough to have one stolen during the course of the challenge.

The challenge is designed to get you out either as an individual or as a group if you desire.

The emphasis is on riders and clubs generating sponsorship for their efforts through friends and family or work colleagues etc.

There are 200 locations, but that does not mean you have to visit all of them.

You set the challenge to suit you and what you are capable of and what you can reasonably achieve.

Yes there are awards, we are this year recognising the amount of sponsorship and money you raise for charity.

We hope the challenge provides you with a sense of purpose and gets you out of the house and into some fresh air and to see some beautiful countryside on your beloved machines. You will be travelling through some spectacular countryside and there is always a lot more to see than just the locations we have in the challenge, so enjoy it.

The organisers are always available to answer any questions via the usual channels.

Finally, we wish you the very best luck in taking up the challenge! Ride well, enjoy the views and locations and stay safe!
